Alive

||30||4||13||
O Nanak, those who do not remember the Naam are dead. The devotees live in contemplative meditation. ||30||4||13||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: those who do not remember the Naam are as good as dead — they sleep right through their own life.

The devotees live, keeping the One in their thoughts.

To remember the One is to be wide awake to your own life.
The deeper layer

Remembering the Naam is what makes a person alive.

Naanak say-ee moo-ay je naam na cheeteh — those who do not remember the Name are like the dead. The words are strong. One gentle way to hear them: forgetting the Name is like sleeping right through your own life.

Bhagat jeevay veechaaree — the devotees, who love and think deeply, are the ones living. Bhagat means a devotee, someone who loves the One.

Think of two kids at the same birthday party. One stares at a screen the whole time. The other laughs, plays and notices everything. Both were there, but only one was awake to it. The shabad's last word is life.

A Question to Sit With
