Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 95
Verse 12 of 22

Pain and Joy Both Held

ਆਪੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥੧੧॥
aapay dukh sukh paa-ay antar aapay bharam bhulaa-ee. ||11||
He Himself infuses pain and pleasure; He Himself makes them wander around in doubt. ||11||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One Itself places pain and joy inside us.

The One Itself lets people wander, lost in doubt.

Pain and joy, and even wandering in doubt, all happen within the One.
The deeper layer

Pain and pleasure, and even the wandering of doubt, all happen within the One. Dukh sukh — pain and pleasure both arise within the One; bharam bhulaaee — led astray by doubt. Nothing, not even confusion, falls outside the One.

A Question to Sit With
