Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 95
Verse 13 of 22

The Great Giver, Seen Clearly

ਵਡਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਨਿਗੁਰੀ ਅੰਧ ਫਿਰੈ ਲੋਕਾਈ ॥੧੨॥
vadaa daataa gurmukh jaataa niguree anDh firai lokaa-ee. ||12||
The Great Giver is revealed to the Gurmukh; without the Guru, the world wanders in darkness. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

To the one who turns to the Guru, the Great Giver becomes known.

Without the Guru, the world wanders around blind, in the dark.

The Guru shows the Great Giver; without that light, the world wanders in the dark.
The deeper layer

The Guru is the lamp that shows the Great Giver. Vadaa daataa — the Great Giver; niguree andh firai — without a Guru, the world wanders blind. There is no blame here; a lamp is simply for seeing.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what has been a lamp when you could not see your way?
