Who Gave You the People You Love

ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਾਪ ਮਹਤਾਰੀ ॥

jin dee-ay tuDh banitaa ar meetaa.
he gave you your spouse and friends;

In plain words

The One gave you your mother and father.

The One gave you your dear children, your brothers and sisters.

The One gave you a husband or wife, and friends.

Hold that Master close in your mind.

Behind every person you love is the One who gave them to you.
The deeper layer

Every person you love came to you as a gift from the same One.

Jin dee-ay tuDh baap mehtaaree — the One who gave you your father and mother. Then come brothers and sisters, children, a husband or wife, and friends. The list goes on through every loving person in a life.

It is easy to be thankful for a gift and forget who gave it. Think of a birthday present. You love the toy, and the best part is the person who thought of you.

So the shabad moves from the gifts to the Giver. Tis thaakur ka-o rakh layho cheetaa — keep that Master in your mind. Every person you love points back to the same One.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people you are most grateful to have?
