Verse 4 of 9

Some Lose Their Days, the Servant Remembers

ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਖੇਲਤ ਜੂਆ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai khaylat joo-aa.
Some pass their lives gambling.
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਅਮਲੀ ਹੂਆ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai amlee hoo-aa.
Some pass their lives getting drunk.
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਪਰ ਦਰਬ ਚੋੁਰਾਏ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai par darab choraa-ay.
Some pass their lives stealing the property of others.
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਨਾਮ ਧਿਆਏ ॥੩॥
har jan bihaavai naam Dhi-aa-ay. ||3||
The humble servants of the Lord pass their lives meditating on the Naam. ||3||

In plain words

Some spend their days gambling.

Some spend them lost in drink.

Some spend them taking what belongs to others.

And the One's humble servants spend their days keeping the Naam in mind.

Some days slip away on things that harm; others are spent on what heals.
The deeper layer

Gambling, drink and taking what belongs to others can use up a life. The same days can be spent on the Naam.

Kaahoo bihaavai khaylat joo-aa — some spend life gambling. Amlee hoo-aa — some spend it drunk or high. Par darab choraa-ay — some spend it taking what belongs to others.

The verse names these plainly. It does not shout or call names. The point is the contrast, not to put anyone down.

Then comes the turn. Har jan bihaavai naam Dhi-aa-ay — the har jan, the One's own people, spend their days keeping the Name in mind.

Think of two kids with the same free afternoon. One spends it on something that leaves them feeling empty. The other spends it on something that fills them up. Same hours, very different day.

A Question to Sit With

What is one way you would like to spend your days more?
