Green Trees in the Fire

ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
raamkalee mehlaa 5.
Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl:
ਦਾਵਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਰਿ ਬੂਟ ॥
daavaa agan rahay har boot.
Even in a forest fire, some trees remain green.
ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਸੰਕਟ ਤੇ ਛੂਟ ॥
maat garabh sankat tay chhoot.
The infant is released from the pain of the mother's womb.
ਜਾ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਭਉ ਜਾਇ ॥
jaa kaa naam simrat bha-o jaa-ay.
Meditating in remembrance on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, fear is dispelled.
ਤੈਸੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਰਾਖੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥੧॥
taisay sant janaa raakhai har raa-ay. ||1||
Just so, the Sovereign Lord protects and saves the Saints. ||1||

In plain words

Even when fire sweeps a forest, some trees are kept green and safe.

A baby comes safely through the hard passage of being born.

Keeping the Naam in mind, fear goes away.

Just so, the Sovereign One keeps the saints safe.

Even in the middle of danger, the One keeps what it loves safe.
The deeper layer

You are watched over, even in the middle of danger.

Daavaa agan rahay har boot — even in a forest fire, some trees stay green. Daavaa agan is a wildfire. Picture flames all around, and yet some trees come through fresh and alive.

Maat garabh sankat tay chhoot — a baby comes safely through the hard passage of being born. Before we could do anything for ourselves, we were already kept safe.

Naam simrat bha-o jaa-ay — keeping the Name in mind, fear goes away. Simrat means remembering. Bha-o means fear.

Think of a little kid scared of the dark who hears a parent humming in the next room. The dark is still there, but the fear melts.

This opens the whole song with a promise. Taisay sant janaa raakhai har raa-ay — in the same way, the One keeps the saints, the holy people, safe.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt protected even though things around you were hard?
