Raag Saarang
Commentary

Raag Saarang, Dupade, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Remember the One, and the ache loosens; trust it, and even the old fear lets go.

The Arc

The rahau promises that remembrance melts pain and brings release. Stanza one deepens it into trust: there is no truer place to turn, so I let the One keep me as it knows best. The close is the fruit — a steadying hand, an undying life, and a mind flooded with joy as the tight grip of fear, even the fear of dying, simply loosens.

Key Vocabulary

  • simrat — remembrance, holding the One in awareness.
  • khalaasee — release, freedom from a carried weight.
  • ji-o jaanhu ti-o raakho — “keep me as You know how,” the trust of sahaj.
  • sad jeevan abinaasee — undying life.
  • jam kee faasee — the noose of death, here the grip of fear.

Themes and Cross-Connections

The movement from remembrance to trust to freedom from fear is a Guru Arjan signature. Sahaj — natural ease that trusts the flow of existence — underlies the whole shabad; the “undying life” is read as belonging that cannot be lost, not clinging to the body.

For Raag Saarang

The thirsting heart of Saarang finds its rest here in trust: not by controlling outcomes but by letting the One keep it, until even fear lets go.

Translation Notes

Jam kee faasee (the noose of death) is rendered as the grip of fear loosening, keeping the joy and setting aside any death-messenger terror, in line with the project’s wellbeing care.
