Raag Saarang
Commentary

Raag Saarang, Dupade, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Fear slips away, the searching ends — the One was home in the heart all along.

The Arc

The rahau announces a heart freed of dread, singing with effortless ease to a Beloved named in the tenderest words. Stanza one tells how: living the teacher’s word, the restless wandering stops, the fog lifts, and the One who loves us turns out to have been within the heart the whole time. The close widens outward — all the world’s joys are the single reality, and the One both acts and causes all acting.

Key Vocabulary

  • bhai bha-o — fear and dread.
  • sahaj sahaj — doubled ease; praise that flows by itself.
  • upaadh — the churning of illusion; samaadh sukh aasan — the settled seat of peace.
  • bhagat vachhal — the One who cherishes those who love; garihi — within the home of the heart.
  • karnaa aap karaavan aapay — the One both acts and causes all acting.

Themes and Cross-Connections

Two of the project’s central threads meet here: the One found within rather than elsewhere, and Ik Onkar as the single reality appearing as everything. Fearlessness (nirbhau) is the doorway; intimacy the destination.

For Raag Saarang

Saarang’s yearning resolves inward: the One the heart thirsts for is discovered not at the end of a search but at home inside, and then seen shining through all the world’s delights.
