When Love Steadies the Mind

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੀਨ ਹੋਛੀ ਮਤਿ ਝੂਠੀ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪੀਰ ਸਰੀਰੇ ॥
manmukh heen hochhee mat jhoothee man tan peer sareeray.
The worthless self-willed manmukh, with false and shallow understanding - his mind and body are held in pain's grip.
ਜਬ ਕੀ ਰਾਮ ਰੰਗੀਲੈ ਰਾਤੀ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਤ ਮਨ ਧੀਰੇ ॥੨॥
jab kee raam rangeelai raatee raam japat man Dheeray. ||2||
Since I came to be imbued with the Love of my Beautiful Lord, I meditate on the Lord, and my mind is encouraged. ||2||

In plain words

When my mind is turned only toward itself, chasing shallow things, it feels restless and sore, and so does my body.

But since the day I filled up with love for the beautiful One, everything changed. I hold the One in mind, and my heart grows calm and steady.

A mind that holds love grows steady; a mind that chases only itself stays restless.
The deeper layer

A mind turned only toward itself stays restless; a mind filled with love finds calm.

A manmukh is a mind that follows only its own pull. The old words call it worthless and shallow. But this describes a state anyone can fall into, not a label for a person. A mind turned only toward itself stays restless. It can even make the body ache: man tan peer sareeray, pain in mind and body.

Then the turn: raam rangeelai raatee. It means dyed through with love for the beautiful One, like a white shirt soaked in bright color. After that, the mind grows Dheeray, steady and calm.

Think of how jumpy you feel when you are only worried about yourself. Then think of how settled you feel beside someone you love. The verse is really about that difference, not about calling anyone names.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your mind feel steady when it is restless?
