In plain words

The One is perfect, endless light — closer to me than my own breath, dearer than anyone I love.

It has captured my heart completely. And by sitting with the Word, turning it over quietly inside me, I finally understand.

The One is closer to you than your own breath.
The deeper layer

The One is as close as my own breath, and understanding comes by listening deeply.

Pooran param jot means perfect, highest light. Paraan hamaaray means "my breath of life." So the One is not far away. The One is as near as the air going in and out of you right now.

Mohan means the One who charms and wins the heart. Think of a song you love so much that you stop whatever you are doing to listen. The heart is caught, gladly.

How does understanding come? Not from someone just telling you. It comes through samjhas sabad beechaaray: turning the Shabad, the Guru's Word, over and over inside you. It is the same patient, deep listening that Japji Sahib calls Suniai, "by listening." You understand something best when you sit with it quietly.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you understood not by being told, but by sitting with it quietly?
