Where The Profit Is

ਬਲਬੰਚ ਕਰੈ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਲਾਭੈ ਸੋ ਧੂਰਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਮੂੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ॥
balbanch karai na jaanai laabhai so Dhoorat nahee moorhHaa.
One who practices deception and does not know where true profit lies is not a Dhoorat - he is a fool.
ਸੁਆਰਥੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਅਸਾਰਥਿ ਰਚਿਓ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰੂੜਾ ॥੧॥
su-aarath ti-aag asaarath rachi-o nah simrai parabh roorhaa. ||1||
He abandons profitable enterprises and is involved in unprofitable ones. He does not meditate on the Beauteous Lord God. ||1||

In plain words

Someone who tricks others and never learns where the profit lies is not clever. They have lost their way.

They trade away what is worthwhile for what is worthless, and forget to hold the beautiful One in mind.

Being sharp at tricks is not the same as being wise about what matters.
The deeper layer

Tricking people only means you have lost your way.

Balbanch karai — someone who tricks others. They do not know where laabh, the real profit, is. So they are nahee dhoorat, not clever. They are moorhaa, foolish. The meaning is gentle: they have lost their way.

Su-aarath ti-aag asaarath rachi-o — they let go of what is worthwhile and keep busy with what is not. And they forget to keep the beautiful One in mind.

Think of trading a real gold coin for a shiny plastic one because it looks brighter. The problem is a wrong idea of what is valuable. No person is written off.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever seen someone win in a way that was a kind of losing?
