The One Who Is Approved

ਸੋਈ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਸੋ ਸੂਰਾ ਸੋ ਦਾਨਾਂ ॥
so-ee chatur si-aanaa pandit so sooraa so daanaaN.
He alone is clever and wise and a religious scholar, he alone is a brave warrior, and he alone is intelligent,
saaDhsang jin har har japi-o naanak so parvaanaa. ||2||67||90||
who chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. O Nanak, he alone is approved. ||2||67||90||

In plain words

Clever, wise, learned, brave and smart: each of these names belongs to one person.

Nanak says: it is whoever repeats the Naam of the One in the Sangat. That life is approved.

The life that rings truest is the one aimed at what matters most.
The deeper layer

Every great title belongs to the person who remembers the One in the Sangat.

The verse gathers the names people are proud of. Chatur means clever. Pandit means scholar. Sooraa means brave warrior. Daanaa means smart.

Then it gives all of them to one kind of person. That is the one who keeps the One in mind in saaDhsang, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One.

Parvaanaa means approved or accepted. That is the quiet final word. A life rings true not by the world's scoreboard, but by where the heart is pointed. Think of a compass. What matters is not how shiny it is, but that it points the right way.

A Question to Sit With

Which of your strengths would you most want to be remembered for?
