Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is the very life of the saints.

In place of pleasures that leave them empty, they drink the nectar of the Naam, an ocean of peace.

Some thrills leave you empty; the deepest joy leaves you full.
The deeper layer

There are two drinks: thrills that leave you empty, and the Naam, which is an ocean of peace.

The One is the very life of sant janaa, the saints, humble holy people. This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Bikhai ras means pleasures that taste like poison in the end. They promise a lot and leave a person empty. Think of a huge bag of candy that leaves you feeling sick.

Amrit is nectar, sweet and life-giving. The Naam is that amrit, a sukh saagar, an ocean of peace. The good-hearted simply choose the sweeter, deeper drink. And they are more alive for it.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that felt exciting at first but left you feeling empty after?
