Sikhism·Raag Saarang·Shabad 111
Verse 2 of 3

So Sweet To My Mind

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਜੇਤੇ ਕਾਮ ਕਰੀਅਹਿ ਤੇਤੇ ਬਿਰਥੇ ਜਾਂਹਿ ॥
bin har bhajan jaytay kaam karee-ah taytay birthay jaaNhi.
Without vibrating and meditating on the Lord, whatever deeds you do will be useless.
ਪੂਰਨ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ਮਨਿ ਮੀਠੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਸਰ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
pooran parmaanand man meetho tis bin doosar naahi. ||1||
The Perfect Embodiment of Supreme Bliss is so sweet to my mind. Without Him, there is no other at all. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without the One held in mind, whatever I do tends to run out empty.

The One is perfect, overflowing joy — so sweet to my mind that nothing else comes close.

Whatever you do finds its fullness when love is at its center.
The deeper layer

What we do feels fullest when the One is at the center.

Bin har bhajan jaytay kaam karee-ah taytay birthay jaahi — without singing to the One, all the things we do go to waste. Birthay means empty.

Then the verse turns joyful. Pooran parmaanand, perfect overflowing joy, is meetho, sweet, to the mind. Tis bin doosar naahi — there is nothing else like it.

The point is not that doing things is bad. What we do finds its fullness when the One is at its center. Think of a bicycle wheel. The spokes do the work, but without the hub in the middle, they fall apart.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that feels sweet and full to you no matter how ordinary it is?
