The Peace That Does Not Wash Off

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
saarag mehlaa 5.
Saarang, Fifth Mehl:
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੋ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰ ॥
man ray naam ko sukh saar.
O my mind, the Naam is the most sublime peace.
ਆਨ ਕਾਮ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਗਲ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਛਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aan kaam bikaar maa-i-aa sagal deeseh chhaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Other affairs of Maya are corrupt. They are nothing more than dust. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, the Naam is the deepest peace.

Everything else Maya offers, all those other pursuits, turns out to be dust.

Chasing what glitters turns to dust; remembering the One is the peace that stays.
The deeper layer

Naam ko sukh saar — the Naam is the essence of peace; Naam is a living presence, not merely a word. Maa-i-aa sagal deeseh chhaar — the rewards of grasping look solid but come to ash. This is the old distinction between sach and jhooth: what endures versus what washes off like cheap dye.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you once wanted badly that mattered far less once you had it?
