Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, remember the One, my Master, the Divine above all the divine.

Say the Naam of the One, again and again. The One is my dearest Beloved.

Behind everything people call holy shines the one Beloved.
The deeper layer

Keep the One close, my mind, because the One is the dearest of all.

This is the rahaa-o, the pause line at the center of the shabad. Narhar is a name for the One. Sagal dayv dayvaa means "the divine behind all the divine." Think of all the names people have used for what is holy. Each one is like a signpost, and every signpost points to the same place. That place is the One.

Naamaa is the Name. Har pareetam moraa means "the One, my most dear Beloved." The verse takes all the respect people feel for holy things and gathers it into one simple love.

A Question to Sit With

What do you think all the world's names for the holy are pointing at?
