The Weight We Keep Adding

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Saarang, Fifth Mehl:
ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਪਾਪ ਕੇ ਬਹੁ ਕੋਟ ॥
keenHay paap kay baho kot.
He commits many millions of sins.
ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਨੀ ਥਕਤ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਤਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਛੋਟ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dinas rainee thakat naahee kateh naahee chhot. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Day and night, he does not get tired of them, and he never finds release. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone can make millions of wrong turns.

Day and night, they never get tired of it, and they never break free.

Mistakes made without pausing quietly pile into a weight.
The deeper layer

Wrong turns pile up fastest when there is no pause between them.

Keenhay paap kay baho kot — millions of wrong turns, one after another. Paap is a wrong turn or a mistake. Dinas rainee thakat naahee — day and night, no tiring, no stopping. Kateh naahee chhot — and no release. Chhot, release, is the setting-down the whole song moves toward, and the closing verse shows where it is found: in the Sangat, with a shared song.

A Question to Sit With

What is a habit that feels heavier the longer you don't stop to look at it?
