In plain words

O my heart, who taught you to live this way?

You do not remember the Master for even a moment — the One who gave you your body and your soul.

Speak gently to your own heart — and remember the One who gave you everything.
The deeper layer

Who taught you to live this way? It is a gentle question to your own heart.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Ray paapee means "O sinner." Here it works best as a soft question you ask yourself, not a label to hurt anyone. It is talking to yourself kindly, not putting yourself down.

The real point is tender. The One gave you jee-o pind, your body and your soul, and keeps on giving. Yet a whole day can slip by without one thankful thought for the Giver.

Think of someone who drives you to practice every single day. It is easy to hop out without saying thanks. The problem here is forgetting. It is an illness to heal, not a crime.

A Question to Sit With

When was the last time you felt grateful just for your body and your breath?
