Sikhism·Raag Saarang·Shabad 124
Verse 2 of 3

Easy to Enjoy, Easy to Forget

ਖਾਤ ਪੀਵਤ ਸਵੰਤ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਖੀਨ ॥
khaat peevat savant sukhee-aa naam simrat kheen.
Eating, drinking and sleeping, you are happy, but contemplating the Naam, the Name of the Lord, you are miserable.
ਗਰਭ ਉਦਰ ਬਿਲਲਾਟ ਕਰਤਾ ਤਹਾਂ ਹੋਵਤ ਦੀਨ ॥੧॥
garabh udar billaat kartaa tahaaN hovat deen. ||1||
In the womb of your mother, you cried and whined like a wretch. ||1||

In plain words

Eating, playing, resting — all of that comes easily, and I enjoy it without a second thought.

Sitting quietly to remember the One feels harder, somehow. Yet from my very first tiny, helpless breath, that One was already holding me.

Comfort comes easy and stillness comes hard — yet you were held before you could earn anything.
The deeper layer

Fun things come easily. Sitting still with the One can feel hard, yet the One has held us from the very start.

Khaat peevat savant sukhee-aa — eating, drinking and sleeping, we are happy. But naam simrat kheen — remembering the Name feels hard. Naam simran means keeping the One's Name in mind.

Think of how easy it is to play a game for an hour, and how hard it can be to sit quietly for two minutes.

Then the verse mentions garabh udar, the mother's womb, where we cried out, small and helpless. It reminds us that we came into the world tiny and needing everything. The One was already holding us before we could do anything to earn it. Grace was there from the very first breath.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that is easy to enjoy but easy to forget to be thankful for?
