Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One has cut down the crooked tree of my lying ways.

The whole forest of doubt burned away in an instant, cleared by the fire of the Naam.

The Name clears a whole forest of doubt in a single bright instant.
The deeper layer

The Name clears away the crooked, tangled things inside us, and it does it fast.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

The verse gives two pictures. First, kutiltaa, the crooked tree of lying and tricks, is cut down with an axe. Second, bharam ban, a whole forest of doubt, burns away khin bheetar, in an instant.

The cutting and burning here are cleaning, not punishment. They clear away what tangles the heart. Raam naam, the Name of the One, does the clearing.

Think of a garden full of weeds. Once they are pulled out, there is room for flowers. This opening line clears space for everything the song says next.

A Question to Sit With

What is a tangled worry that felt huge until something suddenly made it clear?
