Winning Back My Life

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਪਰਹਰੀਆ ਕਾਢੇ ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
kaam kroDh nindaa parharee-aa kaadhay saaDhoo kai sang maar.
Sexual desire, anger and slander are gone; in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I have beaten them and driven them out.
ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੀਤਿਆ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਜੂਐ ਹਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
janam padaarath gurmukh jeeti-aa bahur na joo-ai haar. ||1||
The Gurmukh is successful in this priceless human life; he shall not lose it in the gamble ever again. ||1||

In plain words

Restless craving, flashes of anger, the urge to tear others down — in the Sangat I faced them. I drove them out and sent them on their way.

This one human life is a priceless gift. Turned toward the Guru, I win it, and I will never lose it in a gamble again.

This one life is a priceless gift, and the Sangat helps you win it.
The deeper layer

In the Sangat, the heart's fevers cool down, and this life is won.

Kaam kroDh nindaa are three troubles. Kaam is strong, restless craving. KroDh is anger. Nindaa is tearing others down. They are like fevers in the heart. The verse says they are driven out saaDhoo kai sang, in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. We do not have to beat them alone.

Janam padaarath means this human life is a precious treasure. A gurmukh is someone turned toward the Guru's teaching. That person wins life, instead of losing it joo-ai, in a gamble.

Think of a hard hike with friends. When one person wants to quit, the others cheer them on. Together, everyone reaches the top.

A Question to Sit With

What would "winning" at your one life look like — and who helps you get there?
