The Boat of the Guru’s Feet

ਈਤ ਊਤ ਨ ਡੋਲਿ ਕਤਹੂ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

Here and hereafter, you shall never waver; enshrine the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within your heart.

The boat of the Guru's Feet is found by great good fortune; it shall carry you across the world-ocean. ||1||

In plain words

Hold the Name close in your heart, and you stop wobbling — steady here, steady wherever life takes you next.

Life can feel like a wide, choppy ocean. But there is a boat — the Guru’s teaching — and finding it is great good luck. Climb in, and it carries you safely across.

The Guru’s teaching is a boat — climb in, and the rough ocean of life carries you safely across.
The deeper layer

The Naam in your heart keeps you steady, and the Guru's teaching is a boat that carries you across.

Naam hirdai Dhaar means keep the Name inside your heart. It is an anchor. With it you don't wobble, eet oot, here or in whatever comes next.

Bohith is a big ship. Gur charan, the Guru's feet, means the Guru's guidance. That guidance is the ship. The Gurus often use this picture. Life, sansaar, is like a wide, choppy ocean, and the teaching is what carries you over it.

Finding the boat is bhaagee, great good luck. It is a gift of grace, not a prize you earn. Think of being handed a life jacket right when you need one.

A Question to Sit With

When life feels like rough water, what is the “boat” you can trust to carry you through?
