The One Sweet Taste

The Infinite Lord is totally permeating and pervading the water, the land and the sky.

har naam amrit pee-o naanak aan ras sabh khaar. ||2||96||119||
Drink in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Lord's Name; O Nanak, all other tastes are bitter. ||2||96||119||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Look at the water, the land, the sky. The One fills every bit of it, without end.

Nanak says: drink in the sweet nectar of the Naam. After it, every other taste turns flat, like plain water after honey.

Taste the sweetness of the One, and lesser things quietly lose their pull.
The deeper layer

The One fills everything, and once you taste the Naam, lesser things lose their pull.

Jal thal mahee-al means water, land and sky. All of creation is soaked through with the One, apaar, without end.

Har naam amrit is the Name as amrit, sweet, life-giving nectar. Once you drink it, aan ras sabh khaar: other tastes turn bitter and salty.

It describes what happens to a heart that has tasted the Naam. Think of eating fresh strawberries from the garden. After that, the candy kind just doesn't pull at you the same way.

A Question to Sit With

Has something ever felt so good and real that other things you used to want stopped mattering as much?
