The Song That Carries You Across

bayd puraan simrit saaDhoo jan ih banee rasnaa bhaakhee.
In the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees, the humble and the Holy chant this Bani with their tongues.
jap raam naam naanak nistaree-ai hor dutee-aa birthee saakhee. ||2||98||121||
Chanting the Lord's Name, O Nanak, I am emancipated; other teachings of duality are useless. ||2||98||121||

In plain words

In every book of wisdom, and in the hearts of gentle, holy people, the same Name is sung out loud.

Nanak says: chant the Naam, and you are carried across. Anything that keeps you feeling split off from the One comes to nothing.

Singing the Name is the road that carries you across.
The deeper layer

Every holy voice comes together in one act: singing the Naam.

The Vedas, Puraanas, and Simritees are ancient sacred books of India. The verse gathers them, and all holy people, into one song. Singing the Name carries a person across: nistaree-ai.

Dutee-aa means "the second": the feeling of being split off from the One. Whatever keeps you feeling split away comes to nothing on its own. Think of a choir. Every singer has a different voice, but they sing one song together. The song is what carries them.

A Question to Sit With

What is a song or practice that makes you feel less alone?
