The One Who Is Everything

paraan maan pat pit sut banDhap har sarbas Dhan mor.
The Lord is my breath of life, honor, spouse, parent, child, relative, wealth - everything.
Dharig sareer asat bistaa kiram bin har jaanat hor. ||1||
Cursed is this body of bones, this pile of maggots and manure, if it knows any other than the Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One has become everything to me — my very breath, the people I love like family, and all that I have.

A heart that forgets the One and clings instead to a hundred other things has missed the very thing it was made for.

When the One becomes your very breath, nothing else can own you.
The deeper layer

The One becomes everything to the one who loves: breath, family and wealth all at once.

Paraan means the breath of life. The verse lists honor, spouse, parent, child, relatives and wealth. Then it sums them up as sarbas, everything. Think of how a new baby becomes the whole world to a family. Every plan and every thought turns around that one love.

The next line uses strong, earthy words about the body. Its point is simple. A body that forgets the One and clings to other things has missed what it was made for.

A Question to Sit With

What matters so much to you that it feels like part of your very breath?
