In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

Remember the One with love. Every other deed goes wrong.

Pride, clinging and wanting are never quenched, and the whole world is caught in the grip of time.

Endless wanting only grows hungrier the more you feed it.
The deeper layer

Turn toward the One; the other things we chase never fill us up.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Har bhaj — remember the One with love. Aan karam bikaar — other deeds, done without that, go wrong.

Maan is pride. Moh is clinging. Trisnaa is endless wanting. Na bujhat — none of them is ever quenched. Kaal garas sansaar — the whole world is caught in the grip of time and death, wearing itself out.

The trouble with endless wanting is that feeding it only makes it hungrier. Think of a fire. The more wood you throw on, the bigger it grows, and it is never "full."

A Question to Sit With

What is something you wanted badly, that did not satisfy you once you had it?
