The Quiet One Right Beside You

ਬਿਖੁ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਖਾਇ ਮੂਠੋ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰ ॥
bikh thag-uree khaa-ay mootho chit na sirjanhaar.
He takes the intoxicating drugs of cruelty and corruption, and is plundered. He is not conscious of the Creator Lord God.
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੁਪਤ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਿਓ ਨਿਆਰੋ ਮਾਤੰਗ ਮਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥੩॥
gobind gupat ho-ay rahi-o ni-aaro maatang mat ahaNkaar. ||3||
The Lord of the Universe is hidden and unattached. The mortal is like a wild elephant, intoxicated with the wine of egotism. ||3||

In plain words

Cruelty and greed are like a drug. They promise you something and rob you instead, and you forget the One who made you.

All the while, the One is right there, quiet and close and unbothered. Meanwhile a heart puffed up on pride charges around blind, like an elephant that has had far too much to drink.

The One stays quietly near even when pride makes us blind to it.
The deeper layer

The One stays close and quiet, even while pride makes us charge around blind.

Bikh thag-uree means a poison that tricks you. Cruelty and greed are like that. They promise you something, and then they rob you. Chit na sirjanhaar — you forget the Creator who made you.

Gobind gupt ho-ay rahi-o ni-aaro — the One, the Keeper of the world, stays hidden and untouched, quietly near. Maatang mat ahankaar — the proud heart is like a wild elephant, dizzy with ego.

Think of a friend sitting right next to you while you shout into your phone looking for them. The One never leaves. We just stop noticing.

A Question to Sit With

When has something good been right beside you, unnoticed until later?
