Sikhism·Raag Saarang·Shabad 147
Verse 2 of 3

More Than Every Sacred Book

ਚਾਰਿ ਬੇਦ ਜਿਹਵ ਭਨੇ ॥
chaar bayd jihav bhanay.
You may recite the four Vedas with your tongue,
ਦਸ ਅਸਟ ਖਸਟ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਸੁਨੇ ॥
das asat khasat sarvan sunay.
and listen to the eighteen Puraanas and the six Shaastras with your ears,
ਨਹੀ ਤੁਲਿ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਨਾਮ ਧੁਨੇ ॥
nahee tul gobid naam Dhunay.
but these are not equal to the celestial melody of the Naam, the Name of the Lord of the Universe.
ਮਨ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੧॥
man charan kamal laagay. ||1||
Remain attached to the Lord's Lotus Feet. ||1||

In plain words

You could recite every sacred book by heart and listen to all the ancient teachings with careful ears — beautiful, worthy things to do.

And even that does not equal the quiet melody of the One's Name humming inside you. So stay close to the One.

Knowing about the One is not the same as resting in the One.
The deeper layer

Reciting every sacred book and hearing all the ancient teachings are worthy — and still not equal to the quiet melody of the Name (naam dhunay). Knowing about the One is not the same as resting in the One.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between knowing about something and feeling it?
