Like the Rainbird and the Raindrop

Those who serve my Lord, forever and ever - all their pain, doubt and fear are taken away.

Servant Nanak chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and so he lives, like the song-bird, which is satisfied only by drinking in the water. ||2||5||12||

In plain words

Those who serve my One, always and forever — their pain, their doubts, and their fears all lift away.

Nanak says: I live when I say the Naam, the way the rainbird drinks its raindrop and is satisfied.

A heart lives on the Name the way the rainbird lives for its one raindrop.
The deeper layer

A heart lives on the Name the way the rainbird lives on its raindrop.

Those who stay close to the One always lose their pain, doubt, and fear. Then comes the picture. The chaatrik is the rainbird of old songs. People said it drinks only one kind of raindrop, the swaanti drop that falls in its season. No other water will do.

Jal pee-ai triptaasee — it drinks that water and is satisfied. That is a picture of a heart that longs for the One alone.

It is the favorite picture of Raag Saarang. Nanak lives by the Name, just as the rainbird lives for its raindrop. Think of how a plant on a windowsill leans toward the sun. It turns toward the one thing that keeps it alive.

A Question to Sit With

What's the one thing that satisfies you when nothing else quite does?
