The One Thing I Ask For

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
saarag mehlaa 5.
Saarang, Fifth Mehl:
ਨਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਮਾਗੁ ਸੰਤ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸਗਲ ਕਾਮੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naam bhagat maag sant ti-aag sagal kaamee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I beg for devotion to the Naam, the Name of the Lord; I have forsaken all other activities. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I ask for one thing: to love the Naam.

Everything else I used to chase after, I have set down.

When you know the one thing you want most, everything else gets quieter.
The deeper layer

Ask for one thing only — naam bhagat, devotion to the Naam — and set down sagal kaamee, every other pursuit. When you know clearly what you most want, the wanting itself grows simpler and calmer.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just one thing to keep close forever, what would it be?
