Serving Only the One

ਲੋਕ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਤੇ ਟੂਟੀਐ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਰੀ ॥

I have broken away from other people and family; I work only for God.
ਗੁਰਿ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਉਪਦੇਸਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਵਿ ਏਕ ਹਰੀ ॥੨॥੮॥੧੩੭॥
gur mo ka-o updaysi-aa naanak sayv ayk haree. ||2||8||137||
The Guru has taught me, O Nanak, to serve only the One Lord. ||2||8||137||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have loosened my grip on needing the crowd's approval and on living up to every expectation, and I work for the One instead.

Nanak says: the Guru has taught me to serve the One alone.

You can be free of needing everyone's approval.
The deeper layer

Letting go of needing everyone's approval sets you free to serve the One with your whole heart.

Lok kutamb means people and family. The verse speaks of breaking away from them. Here that means loosening your need for the crowd's approval and for meeting every expectation. It is not about being cold to anyone. It is freedom.

Gur mo ka-o updaysi-aa — the Guru taught me. And the lesson is to serve only the One.

Think of drawing a picture just because you love to draw, not for likes. Then you can put your whole heart into it.

A Question to Sit With

Whose approval do you find yourself chasing, and what would it feel like to let some of it go?
