I remained under the influence of corruption, night and day; I did whatever I pleased. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In my mind, I never once sang the praises of the One.

Day and night I stayed stuck on things that harm me, and did whatever I pleased.

Looking honestly at yourself is the start of change, not a reason for shame.
The deeper layer

An honest look inside can start here: I forgot the One for a long time.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It comes from Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Guru. Man kar kabhoo na har gun gaa-i-o — in my mind, I never sang the goodness of the One. Bikhi-aaskat means stuck on things that do harm. Day and night, I did whatever I felt like.

This kind of honest look is never meant as punishment. It is like clearing a messy desk before starting something new. Being honest makes room for grace and a fresh start.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you can look at honestly in yourself without being hard on yourself for it?
