What I Kept Getting Wrong

ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਸੁਨਿਓ ਨਹਿ ਕਾਨਨਿ ਪਰ ਦਾਰਾ ਲਪਟਾਇਓ ॥
gur updays suni-o neh kaanan par daaraa laptaa-i-o.
I never listened to the Guru's Teachings; I was entangled with others' spouses.
ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਤ ਸਮਝਿਓ ਨਹ ਸਮਝਾਇਓ ॥੧॥
par nindaa kaaran baho Dhaavat samjhi-o nah samjhaa-i-o. ||1||
I ran all around slandering others; I was taught, but I never learned. ||1||

In plain words

I did not listen to the Guru's teaching, and I let myself get pulled toward wanting what was never mine to want.

I rushed around finding fault with other people and tearing them down. People tried to teach me, but I did not take it in.

Naming what you keep getting wrong, gently, is how you start getting it right.
The deeper layer

Here, named plainly and gently, are the things I kept getting wrong.

Gur updays suni-o neh — I didn't listen to the Guru's teaching. Par daaraa means someone else's husband or wife. Getting tangled up there means wanting what was never yours to want. Par nindaa means speaking badly about others, tearing them down behind their backs.

Samjhi-o nah samjhaa-i-o — people tried to teach me, but I didn't take it in. Think of a coach giving the same tip again and again before you finally hear it. The mistakes are named without heaping shame on the one who names them.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you keep meaning to change but have not quite listened to yourself about yet?
