In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

Mother, how can I live without the One?

Glory to the Lord of the whole world! All I ask is to sing Your praises. Without You, I cannot live.

To long for the One is already to be close to it.
The deeper layer

A child calls out to its mother: how can I live without the One?

These lines open the second stretch of Raag Saarang — the ashtapadees, hymns of eight verses. The word maa-ee (mother) turns the longing into something a child already knows: the cry for the one you cannot live without. jagdees is the One of the whole universe. The rahau (pause-line) sets the note the whole hymn returns to: to live is to sing this, and to sing this is to live.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you feel you could not live a single day without — and why?
