Awake All Night, Watching

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਸ ਪਿਆਸੀ ਕਾਮਨਿ ਦੇਖਉ ਰੈਨਿ ਸਬਾਈ ॥

I am thirsty, thirsty for the Lord; the soul-bride gazes upon Him all through the night.

My mind is absorbed into the Lord, my Lord and Master. Only God knows the pain of another. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am thirsty for the One, so thirsty that I stay awake all night just watching for it, the way you wait up for someone you love to come home.

My whole mind has melted into it. And here is a comfort: the One knows the ache inside you. No pain of yours ever goes unseen.

The ache you carry is fully known and fully held.
The deeper layer

The One knows the pain each heart carries. peer paraa-ee means the One knows the pain a heart carries — your hidden hurt is fully seen and understood. Wakefulness through the night is the posture of a love that will not look away.

A Question to Sit With

When has it helped just to know that someone understood how you felt?
