The Deep Ocean of Jewels

ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਰਤਨਾਗਰ ਅਵਰ ਨਹੀ ਅਨ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
gahir gambheer saagar ratnaagar avar nahee an poojaa.
God is the Deep and Unfathomable Ocean, the Source of all jewels; no other is worthy of worship.
ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਭਰਮ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੫॥
sabad beechaar bharam bha-o bhanjan avar na jaani-aa doojaa. ||5||
I contemplate the Shabad, the Destroyer of doubt and fear; I do not know any other at all. ||5||

In plain words

The One is a deep, deep ocean, too vast to measure, holding every treasure there is. Nothing else is worth turning toward in the same way.

When I sit with the Word, my doubt and fear break apart, and I find I need to look nowhere else.

When you find the ocean, you stop chasing puddles.
The deeper layer

The One is a deep ocean full of treasures. When we think on the Word, doubt and fear break apart.

Gahir gambheer saagar ratnaagar means a deep, deep ocean, the home of every jewel. Think of divers exploring a sea so deep they never find the bottom — only more treasure. Avar nahee an poojaa means no other is worth worship.

This is the same note as the Mool Mantar, the opening lines of the Guru Granth Sahib. It is not many things fighting for the heart. It is one reality behind all of them. Sabad beechaar means thinking on the Word. It works as bharam bha-o bhanjan, the breaker of doubt and fear.

A Question to Sit With

What is so big and steady in your life that smaller worries shrink beside it?
