Verse 8 of 9

Filled So Full It Does Not Waver

ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਅਨਾਥੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
agam agochar anaath ajonee gurmat ayko jaani-aa.
God is Inaccessible and Unfathomable, Unmastered and Unborn; through the Guru's Teachings, I know the One Lord.
ਸੁਭਰ ਭਰੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਡੋਲੈ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੭॥
subhar bharay naahee chit dolai man hee tay man maani-aa. ||7||
Filled to overflowing, my consciousness does not waver; through the Mind, my mind is pleased and appeased. ||7||

In plain words

The One cannot be reached by grasping or fully figured out — no one made it, and it answers to no one. Through the Guru's teaching, I have come to know this One.

And when I am filled right up to the brim, my mind stops wobbling. From inside itself, the mind grows quiet and content.

A mind that is full stops wobbling.
The deeper layer

The One is beyond our reach and beyond our senses, yet the Guru's teaching lets us know the One. A full heart does not wobble.

Agam agochar anaath ajonee are four names. Agam means out of reach. Agochar means beyond the senses. Anaath means no one is master over the One. Ajonee means never born. These words name the One by what is bigger than us, just as the Mool Mantar does with ajooni.

Subhar bharay naahee chit dolai means filled to overflowing, the mind does not waver. Think of a water bottle filled to the very top. Shake it, and it hardly sloshes. A half-empty one splashes all over. Steadiness here comes from fullness, not from control. Man hee tay man maani-aa — the mind is satisfied from within itself.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel so full and content that nothing can shake you?
