The Word That Dissolves Fear

ਸਬਦਿ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਜਮਕਾਲ ਨਿਖੰਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
sabad bha-o bhanjan jamkaal nikhanjan har saytee liv laa-ee.
Through the Word of the Shabad, I am lovingly attuned to the Lord, the Destroyer of fear, the Destroyer of the Messenger of Death.
ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧॥
har sukh-daata gurmukh jaataa sehjay rahi-aa samaa-ee. ||1||
As Gurmukh, I have realized the Lord, the Giver of peace; I remain intuitively absorbed in Him. ||1||

In plain words

Tuned to the One through the Word, I feel my fears dissolve — even the biggest fear of all, the fear of death, loosens its hold.

Facing the Guru, I have come to know the One as the Giver of peace, and I rest, easily and naturally, inside it.

Even the fear of death softens in the light of the Word.
The deeper layer

The Guru's Word melts fear, even the big fear of death, and leaves a deep, easy peace.

Sabad is the Word, the Guru's teaching. It is bha-o bhanjan, the breaker of fear. It is also jamkaal nikhanjan, the one that undoes even the dread of death. Here that means the fear of death loosening its grip.

Gurmukh means one who faces the teaching, the way a sunflower turns toward the sun. Such a person comes to know the One as sukh-daata, the Giver of peace.

Sehjay rahi-aa samaa-ee means resting inside that peace with natural ease. Think of a child who falls asleep calmly because someone they trust is sitting nearby.

A Question to Sit With

What helps a big fear feel smaller and more bearable?
