Bathing in Pure Water

ਮਨੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਮੁਕਤੋ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈ ॥
man sabad marai taa mukto hovai har charnee chit laa-ee.
If the mortal dies in the Shabad, then he is liberated; he focuses his consciousness on the Lord's Feet.

har sar saagar sadaa jal nirmal naavai sahj subhaa-ee. ||5||
The Lord is an Ocean; His Water is Forever Pure. Whoever bathes in it is intuitively imbued with peace. ||5||

In plain words

When the grabbing, self-centered me grows quiet inside the Word, a freedom opens up, and the mind rests at the One's feet.

The One is an ocean whose water is always clean. Whoever bathes in it comes out calm and at ease.

The cleanest washing happens on the inside.
The deeper layer

Freedom comes when the grabbing "me" grows quiet in the Word, and the One is a pool of clean water that brings peace.

The old words say man sabad marai: the mind "dies" in the Word. That means ego goes quiet. It is the grabbing, me-first voice inside that settles down. It is never about harming yourself. When that voice rests, mukto hovai, a person becomes free.

Then a picture: har sar saagar, the One is a lake, an ocean. Its water is sadaa jal nirmal, always clean. Whoever bathes there comes out calm and at ease.

Many people bathe at holy rivers and pilgrimage places. This verse speaks of an inner bath, one that cleans the heart. Think of how you feel after a long, warm shower on a hard day.

A Question to Sit With

What leaves you feeling clean and refreshed on the inside?
