When the Heart Learns to Love

ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟੰਤਰ ਕੇ ਪਾਪ ਬਿਨਾਸਨ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
kot kotantar kay paap binaasan har saachaa man bhaa-i-aa.
Millions upon millions of sins are erased, when the mind comes to love the True Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
har bin avar na soojhai doojaa satgur ayk bujhaa-i-aa. ||1||
I do not know any other, except the Lord; the True Guru has revealed the One Lord to me. ||1||

In plain words

The moment the heart falls in love with the True One, a mountain of old mistakes simply falls away.

After that, nothing else pulls at me the same way. The Guru opened my eyes to the One.

Love clears away what effort alone cannot.
The deeper layer

Love can clear away what hard effort cannot.

Har saachaa man bhaa-i-aa means "the True One became dear to my mind." When that happens, millions of old mistakes fall away. Think of trying to fix a friendship by following a list of rules. It rarely works. But when you truly care about your friend, the small hurts between you just melt. Love does the clearing.

Then the verse says no other comes to mind. That line comes back again and again in these hymns. It is the settled center of a heart that has found its home. The Satguru, the True Teacher, showed that one thing: the One.

A Question to Sit With

Has loving something ever made an old habit or worry just fall away?
