Satisfied, and Finally Calm

ਰਸਨਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਲਾਲ ਭਈ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਈ ॥
rasnaa sabad veechaar ras raatee laal bha-ee rang laa-ee.
Contemplating the Shabad, the tongue is imbued with joy; embracing His Love, it is dyed a deep crimson.
raam naam nihkayval jaani-aa man taripti-aa saaNt aa-ee. ||3||
I have come to know the Name of the Pure Detached Lord; my mind is satisfied and comforted. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When even your words are steeped in joy, and your whole self is dyed the color of love, something settles.

I came to know the pure, unattached One, and my mind grew full and satisfied — and a deep calm came over me.

When the seeking finds its object, a deep calm arrives.
The deeper layer

When the search finds what it was looking for, the heart grows calm.

Rasnaa sabad veechaar ras raatee means even the tongue is soaked in the joy of the Word. Thinking about the Shabad, the Guru's Word, fills even our speech with sweetness. Love dyes it a deep red.

Then the verse says man triptiaa saant aa-ee: "my mind is satisfied, and calm has come." Think of searching the whole house for your lost puppy, and then finding her asleep under your bed. The searching stops. Your whole body relaxes. That is the calm of finding the One, who is pure and never stuck to anything.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between being distracted and being satisfied?
