Sikhism·Raag Saarang·Shabad 163
Verse 8 of 9

The One in Which the World Lives

ਏਕਸ ਮਹਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਏਕੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
aykas meh sabh jagto vartai virlaa ayk pachhaanai.
The whole world is contained in the One Lord. How rare are those who understand the One Lord.
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੭॥
sabad marai taa sabh kichh soojhai an-din ayko jaanai. ||7||
One who dies in the Shabad comes to know everything; night and day, he realizes the One Lord. ||7||

In plain words

The whole world lives inside the One — though only a rare few see it.

When the grabbing self grows quiet in the Word, everything comes clear, and you know the One in the day and in the night, without a break.

The whole world is one thing wearing countless faces.
The deeper layer

The whole world lives inside the One.

Aykas meh sabh jagto vartai means "the whole world is held in the One." This is Ik Onkar, "One Creator," said in plain words. Think of all the apps on a phone. They look different, but they all run on one battery. The world is like that — many faces, one Source.

But only a virlaa, a rare person, truly sees it. The verse says the key is to "die in the Word." That means letting the grabbing, me-first self go quiet in the Guru's Word. Then everything comes clear. That person knows the One day and night, awake and asleep, without a break.

A Question to Sit With

What would change if you saw everything as part of one connected whole?
