Deep Beyond Measuring

ਹਰਿ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰੁ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥
har gahir gambheer gunee gaheer gur kai sabad pachhaani-aa.
The Lord is Deep, Profound and Unfathomable, the Ocean of Excellence; He is realized through the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਹਿ ਭਾਇ ਦੂਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਬਉਰਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥
baho biDh karam karahi bhaa-ay doojai bin sabdai ba-uraani-aa. ||1||
Mortals do their deeds in all sorts of ways, in the love of duality; but without the Shabad, they are insane. ||1||

In plain words

The One is deep and profound, an ocean of every good thing, and it is known through the Word.

People rush about doing all sorts of things, pulled this way and that — but without the steadying Word, the heart stays lost and confused.

Rushing about without a center leaves the heart lost.
The deeper layer

The One is a deep ocean of goodness, known through the Guru's Word.

Har gahir gambheer gunee gaheer — the One is deep, very deep, an ocean of every good quality. Gur kai sabad pachhaani-aa — the One is recognized through the Shabad, the Guru's Word.

Bhaa-ay doojai means the pull of "two-ness." It is a heart split between the One and a hundred other things. People do all kinds of deeds while pulled this way and that.

Bin sabdai ba-uraani-aa — without the Word, they go mad. The meaning is a heart that has lost its center and stays confused. No person is being condemned. Think of a spinning top. When it loses its center, it wobbles all over the table.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever been very busy and still felt lost inside?
