Verse 3 of 9

Washed Clean and Kept Clean

har naam naavai so-ee jan nirmal fir mailaa mool na ho-ee.
That humble being who bathes in the Lord's Name becomes immaculate; he never becomes polluted again.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਹੈ ਮੈਲਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥੨॥
naam binaa sabh jag hai mailaa doojai bharam pat kho-ee. ||2||
Without the Name, the whole world is polluted; wandering in duality, it loses its honor. ||2||

In plain words

Whoever bathes in the Name comes out clean, and stays clean — the freshness does not wear off.

Without it, the heart clouds over again and again, wandering from thing to thing and losing what makes it shine.

A clean heart is kept clean by what you keep returning to.
The deeper layer

Bathing in the Name makes the heart clean, and it stays clean.

Har naam naavai so-ee jan nirmal — whoever bathes in the Name becomes spotless. This is a bath on the inside. Fir mailaa mool na ho-ee — that person does not get dirty again.

The dirt here is a cloudiness in the heart. It is not about ritual or who is "pure." Doojai bharam pat kho-ee — the heart that wanders in two-ness, split between many things, loses its pat, its honor and its shine.

Think of cleaning a window. Suddenly you can see the whole garden clearly. The Name keeps the window of the heart clear like that.

A Question to Sit With

What do you return to that helps you feel fresh and clear again?
