Praising as Best I Can

ਉਪਮਾ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਕਹਤ ਜੇਤ ਪਾਹੂਚਾ ॥
upmaa sunhu raajan kee santahu kahat jayt paahoochaa.
Listen to the Praises of my Lord King, O Saints. I chant them as best I can.
ਬੇਸੁਮਾਰ ਵਡ ਸਾਹ ਦਾਤਾਰਾ ਊਚੇ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ॥੨॥
baysumaar vad saah daataaraa oochay hee tay oochaa. ||2||
My Lord King, the Great Giver, is Immeasurable. He is the Highest of the high. ||2||

In plain words

Listen, you saints, to the wonder of the One I love. I sing of it as best I can, though it is far beyond my small words.

It is beyond all measuring, the great Giver of everything, the highest of the high.

You can praise something wholeheartedly even when words fall short.
The deeper layer

Listen, saints: here is praise of the One, as well as I can give it, though the One is beyond all measure.

Upmaa sunhu means "listen to the praise." Kahat jayt paahoochaa means "I say as much as I can reach." It is an honest, humble admission. Words fall short of the One who is baysumaar, beyond measuring.

Vad saah daataaraa means the great King and Giver. Oochay hee tay oochaa means higher than the highest.

Think of a child stretching up on tiptoe to touch the top of a doorframe. The child reaches with all their heart and doesn't pretend to have arrived. That is the awe here.

A Question to Sit With

What have you tried to describe to a friend that was almost too good for words?
