Everything Bright Is Yours

mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
daat jot sabh soorat tayree.
All gifts, light and beauty are Yours.
bahut si-aanap ha-umai mayree.
Excessive cleverness and egotism are mine.
baho karam kamaaveh lobh mohi vi-aapay ha-umai kaday na chookai fayree.
The mortal performs all sorts of rituals in greed and attachment; engrossed in egotism, he shall never escape the cycle of reincarnation.
naanak aap karaa-ay kartaa jo tis bhaavai saa-ee gal changayree. ||2||
O Nanak, the Creator Himself inspires all to act. Whatever pleases Him is good. ||2||

In plain words

Every bright and beautiful thing — every gift, every bit of light — comes from the Source. The only thing I can call my own is the habit of thinking I did it all myself.

When you do good things just to look good, that separate, showing-off feeling keeps you going in circles. But underneath it all, the Source is quietly moving through everything. Nanak says: the Creator moves everything, and whatever pleases the One is good.

Everything bright comes from the Source; only the boasting is ours to drop.
The deeper layer

Shalok, Third Mehl. daat jot sabh soorat tayree — all gifts, light and beauty belong to the One; only cleverness and ego (haumai) are claimed as one's own. Rituals (karam) done in greed and attachment keep one circling; ego never ends the round (haumai kaday na chookai fayree). aap karaa-ay kartaa: the Creator inspires all action; jo tis bhaavai saa-ee gal changayree — whatever pleases the One is good. Trust, not fatalism.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of a good thing you did that you were quick to take all the credit for?
