The Flow That Even Kings Follow

salok mehlaa 2.
Shalok, Second Mehl:
tis si-o kaisaa bolnaa je aapay jaanai jaan.
How can we speak of Him? Only He knows Himself.
cheeree jaa kee naa firai saahib so parvaan.
His decree cannot be challenged; He is our Supreme Lord and Master.
cheeree jis kee chalnaa meer malak salaar.
By His Decree, even kings, nobles and commanders must step down.
jo tis bhaavai naankaa saa-ee bhalee kaar.
Whatever is pleasing to His Will, O Nanak, is a good deed.
jinHaa cheeree chalnaa hath tinHaa kichh naahi.
By His Decree, we walk; nothing rests in our hands.
saahib kaa furmaan ho-ay uthee karlai paahi.
When the Order comes from our Lord and Master, all must rise up and take to the road.
jayhaa cheeree likhi-aa tayhaa hukam kamaahi.
As His Decree is issued, so is His Command obeyed.
ghalay aavahi naankaa saday uthee jaahi. ||1||
Those who are sent, come, O Nanak; when they are called back, they depart and go. ||1||

In plain words

How could we ever fully describe the One? Only the One knows itself. The way existence moves cannot be argued with — it simply is how things are.

Even kings and the most powerful people must, in time, step aside; no one is above the flow. Nanak says: whatever pleases the One is the good thing to do. We move because of it, and nothing rests in our own hands alone. When the moment comes, we rise and set out. Nanak says: those who are sent, arrive — and when they are called, they gently go on.

Everyone, even the powerful, moves within the same flow of existence.
The deeper layer

Shalok, Second Mehl — a Hukam meditation. The decree (cheeree) that even kings, nobles and commanders must obey. Whatever aligns with the flow (jo tis bhaavai) is the good deed. Arriving and departing (ghalay aavahi, sadhay uthee jaahi) is the coming and going of a life: we are sent, and later we are called home.

A Question to Sit With

What is something completely out of your hands that you are learning to make peace with?
