There Is No One Like You

salok mehlaa 1.
Shalok, First Mehl:
hor sareek hovai ko-ee tayraa tis agai tuDh aakhaaN.
If there were any other equal to You, O Lord, I would speak to them of You.
tuDh agai tuDhai saalaahee mai anDhay naa-o sujaakhaa.
You, I praise You; I am blind, but through the Name, I am all-seeing.
jaytaa aakhan saahee sabdee bhaakhi-aa bhaa-ay subhaa-ee.
Whatever is spoken, is the Word of the Shabad. Chanting it with love, we are embellished.
naanak bahutaa ayho aakhan sabh tayree vadi-aa-ee. ||1||
Nanak, this is the greatest thing to say: all glorious greatness is Yours. ||1||

In plain words

If there were anyone else as great as the One, you could turn to them and speak. But there is no other like this, so you speak to the One directly, praising the very source of everything.

On your own you might feel like you are fumbling in the dark, and the Naam is like sight returning — suddenly you can see. Whatever is spoken is the Shabad, and singing it with love makes you beautiful. Nanak says: the biggest thing you can ever say is simple. All of this greatness belongs to You.

The biggest thing you can ever say is also the simplest: all of this belongs to something greater than me.
The deeper layer

Shalok M1. No sareek (equal) exists, so praise goes straight to the Source. Andhe... sujaakha — blindness giving way to sight — is fumbling in the dark giving way to clear seeing, through the Name. Bhaakhi-aa bhaa-ay — chanting with love. The close, sabh teri vadi-aa-ee, gives all greatness to the One.

A Question to Sit With

When has something suddenly become clear, like a light turning on inside you?
