One Giver, and We All Receive

mehlaa 1.
First Mehl:
jaaN na si-aa ki-aa chaakree jaaN jammay ki-aa kaar.
When there was nothing, what happened? What happens when one is born?
sabh kaaran kartaa karay daykhai vaaro vaar.
The Creator, the Doer, does all; He watches over all, again and again
jay chupai jay mangi-ai daat karay daataar.
. Whether we keep silent or beg out loud, the Great Giver blesses us with His gifts.
ik daataa sabh mangtay fir daykheh aakaar.
The One Lord is the Giver; we are all beggars. I have seen this throughout the Universe.
naanak ayvai jaanee-ai jeevai dayvanhaar. ||2||
Nanak knows this: the Great Giver lives forever. ||2||

In plain words

Before you were born, you did nothing to earn your place here, and once you arrived, the gift of life was simply given. The One who makes everything is always at work, watching over all of it, again and again.

Whether you ask out loud or say nothing at all, the giving never stops. There is one great Giver, and every single one of us receives — we are all held by the same open hand. Nanak says: that Giver lives forever, and the giving goes on and on.

You didn't earn your place here — it was given. And the giving never stops.
The deeper layer

Shalok M1. Jaa na si-aa... jaa jammay — you did nothing to earn existence; life is gift. Ik daata sabh mangte — the one Giver, all receivers — echoes Japji's "the Giver keeps giving." Whether we ask or stay silent, grace is already flowing, received not earned. Jeevai dayvanhaar — the Giver is inexhaustible.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you were given that you could never have earned?
