No One Looks Evil to You

salok mehlaa 4.
Shalok, Fourth Mehl:
Everyone belongs to our Lord and Master. Everyone came from Him.
hukam pachhaanai khasam kaa taa sach paavai ko-ay.
Only by realizing the Hukam of His Command, is Truth obtained.
gurmukh aap pachhaanee-ai buraa na deesai ko-ay.
The Gurmukh realizes his own self; no one appears evil to him.
naanak gurmukh naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai sahilaa aa-i-aa so-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, the Gurmukh meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Fruitful is his coming into the world. ||1||

In plain words

Every single person comes from the same One and belongs to that One — no exceptions. When you recognize the One's Hukam, you find what is true.

And here is the beautiful part: when you turn to the Guru and come to know your own self, no one looks evil to you anymore, because you can feel the same One inside them too. Nanak says the one who turns to the Guru and remembers the Naam has made coming into the world worthwhile.

When you know yourself, you stop seeing enemies — you feel the same One in everyone.
The deeper layer

Everyone belongs to the One, so no one looks evil to the heart that knows itself.

Sabh ko-ee hai khasam kaa — everyone belongs to the Master, and everyone comes from the Master. Nobody stands outside. Hukam pachhaanai — recognizing the Hukam, the One's will, brings you to Truth. Gurmukh aap pachhaanee-ai buraa na deesai ko-ay — turned toward the Guru, you know yourself, and no one looks evil to you. Sahilaa aa-i-aa so-ay — such a life is a coming into the world that bears fruit.

A Question to Sit With

What changes when you imagine that the person who annoys you comes from the same source you do?
